Delaware already has data centers. Each has 5 people per shift and operates across 3 shifts so roughly 24 per each are employed… So those 24 jobs added to the Newark economy, need to be balanced against the amount of money a loud data center will drive away. Does it lower home value? One would think, and would that total lowering of home values due to a “twenty four hour conversation”, cost the city more than would 24 jobs? Most likely, yes.
Secondly, Newark Delaware has recently had a boom of building activity. Main Street West, as well as Delaware Avenue, and don’t forget the University construction on Loering Street. How much increase did all of New Castle County’s businesses get uplifted from all that activity? Building the power plant will employ less.
So when the lobbyists begin promising jobs, remember, in a data center, there are not that many jobs. Computers run themselves.
Furthermore, data centers have issues with getting good help on board.
At a roundtable of Data Center managers, several problems were evident. Good people don’t stay; they jump shift quite often.
One reason they don’t stay is because of job pressure– the pressure to keep data centers on line and up and running all the time. One thing goes wrong, they lose their jobs. Therefore they are on the constant lookout for centers that have the means to avoid those interruption, and therefore provide a higher level of security.
What is known as densities, has increased over the past 5 years immensely.. That is the number of transactions per minute. They are way up due to technological advancements. Which means one small one half-second glitch, would wipe out data for one half of the United States of America .
The roundtable also dipped into carbon emissions. Data Centers use a lot of electricity. More than a town. A data center must have a constant front against accusations it is damaging the environment worse than anything other than a coal plant…
The perfect employee for a data center does not need a college degree nor does he need certification in computers. Actually someone who hacks games and can bypass securities and download copyrighted material, is the perfect candidate recommended to work inside a data center. Sort of turns the world on it’s end, doesn’t it?
So Newark. here is the bottom line. What do you want to do?
Do you want a 240 Megawatt gas turbine power plant next to your domicile, or don’t you? You will have a few people with bacon grease hair, all selling you how great having jobs will be. Just remember they are selling! Just like that guy who promises you the car you buy, can fly to Japan and back. Both are selling.
Looking across the nation, whenever a company comes in, they always say they will hire 200+. If they have their own power plant, it actually is between 30 and 50. In Delaware, the bank’s data centers themselves, usually run a crew of 24 on the average.
So 24 kids making $50,000 nets $1.2 million. If nearby houses lose $10,000 in asking price due to the data center’s twenty-four hour conversation, it would take 120 houses to suck that gain right out of the air. Then every single other house selling under its estimate as well, pulls Newark further into a hole worse off than it is today…..
120 Homes are basically two streets worth.
There are over 100 streets within a radius of one mile from the power plant…
This will create a net loss for Newark, unless the taxes paid by the data center more than make up for the lost revenue the depression of house values will cause over the next 75 years…
But that is just calculations, and calculations don’t mean anything. The bottom line, Newark, is what do you want to do? Do you need more jobs? More traffic? More power outages? More noises? More carbon dioxide? More aggravation?
Don’t be intimidated by the bacon grease lobbyists. They usually only interact with members of the General Assembly who get intimidated rather easily. Stand up to them if you wish. They are just people hired to paint only one side of an issue in glowing colors. Doesn’t mean we have to believe them, especially when we have the Internet that can tell us the truth with two clicks… 🙂
Bottom line, it is what you want to do. Choose to fight it, and if there are enough of you, …. it is not going in….. No one wants to take the blame for depreciating Newark’s house values by $10,000 a pop, if you make it an issue…
With Sandy’s approach, words of warning went out to all campaigns.. Get your big signs down for the storm. Feel free to put them up after the storm blows by. Everyone got an email.
Democrats were in full force, and in New Castle County, not one Democratic sign was left standing… By noon all were stored for safe keeping…
There were no libertarian candidate’s signs. As dedicated citizens, the libertarian team scoured the county and by noon, their signs were all stored for save keeping.
The one Jill Stein sign I’d seen, was gone. Secured by the Green Party….
In fact the only signs up as darkness approached, were those of Alex Pires, which is understandable, it being a one man operation, and those of the Republican line up, which apparently has even fewer supporters.
It looks like Kansas, at intersections now, with only Republicans contesting a one man operation….
If the Green Party and Libertarian party can mobilize faster than the Republican, it is time to stop calling the Republican Party a “major” party.
Even the Wizard of Oz had more going for it than today’s Delaware Republicans, who with their daily bumbles are rapidly creating a new definition of the English word pathetic.
I’ll be brief.
The reason?
Most Republicans stayed home. Why bother they said. I’m voting Democratic anyway.
Therefore to a normal Republican, it doesn’t matter whether Luger or something worse gets the primary vote. The Republican Party is so repugnant, that in comparison, chemical toilets actually smell decent.
They are either voting Democrat, or not voting… What was the turnout in Indiana? Apparently only 16% thought enough to vote…..
Meaning 84% of Republicans, said fuck it.
The party is dead.
If you ever want your vote to be heard or to make a statement, there is still time in Delaware to switch your party affiliation.
The last opportunity to leave the Republican party opened on Wednesday, last week, and continues until Friday, May 25th, 2012.
Again, if you want to your vote to stand only as a protest vote, like those who vote for Bob Barr or Ralph Nader fof President, then the Republican Party is still for you.
If you want your vote to have any power, you need to switch as soon as possible.
“I’m starting to think we really ticked off Mother Nature somehow, because we’ve been getting spanked by her for about a year now,” he said while grabbing some coffee at a convenience store…..
OF COURSE YOU DID, DUMMY. YOU VOTED FOR REPUBLICANS!
The city of Newark has been trying to do it’s part in controlling misbehavior that occurs after drinking.
Townspeople have railed at them for not getting University of Delaware students to behave, and so they instituted a policy that holds business owners responsible, when and if they are deemed to run a disreputable business.
Although that may sound good to people who hate fun and drinking, it may not bode well for businesses considering setting up an establishment in Newark.
“Good”, some Council members say: “we don’t want their kind here anyway”. And they may have a couple of residents who will back them up… After all, Grotto’s belongs at the beach. Get rid of it on Main Street; they serve beer… Let’s get rid of all the Grotto’s while we’re at it! No one likes their pizza anyway.
Unbeknown to every Newark business, this law is in the books of Newark’s code.
For residents who are tired of loud behavior, that is a breath of fresh air. Now, they may finally get relief from those college students peeing in their bushes…
However, for a business, there is no set level that must take effect, before the implementation of the following penalties. It’s as if your boot camp drill instructor stood you at attention and told you that if you moved in the slightest, he/she would slam you with a baseball bat… With no parameters set, no time limit given, eventually you shuffle, and BAM, right into the back of your medulla….
Last Wednesday, at an well known established on Main Street, two girls got into a bitch yip. They were quickly ushered out of the building by management and employees. Calm was restored. But some random person called the police, who arrived after the incident was over. They arrested the two girls who were still hanging around outside, and then came in, handcuffed the assistant manager, and took them all to the police station, where they charged the girls with disorderly conduct, and the manager for running a disreputable business… Grottos… a disreputable business?… Has everyone on Newark’s council lost their mind?
A business is open to the public. A business can’t be responsible for every individual. No matter how much they try, they can’t be! They CAN be responsible for having systems in place, ones that that can be initiated if and when such a random unforeseen acts were to occur… But in this case, through a random system of events, an assistant manager is now going to have to pay at least 10% of his yearly income, hopefully put up by his company, to fight these charges. 10% of his income… His crime? He was scheduled to work that night… That’s it…
Or let’s put this irrationality in in a different way: it’s a given that Newark’s police are charged with policing the town. It’s also a given that City Council is the party responsible for all the laws made by the town. Check out this law.
302.9.3 Notice. Notice shall be as specified in this chapter. Notice to remove graffiti shall specify that it is unlawful for the owner or anyone who has primary responsibility for control of the property, or for maintenance or repair of the property, to permit property that is defaced with graffiti to remain defaced beyond a period of 10 days after service of notice as specified in this chapter.
Currently there is graffiti on property owned by the City of Newark.. The person ultimately responsible for that property, would be the acting manager, which in this case would be the mayor, and members of the City Council. They are the elected officials held accountable for the running of the city. As we can see, here is evidence that they broke the above statute by allowing a single individual to deface their property.
Under the same principals which they are applying to the business which silenced a girl spat, they, the mayor and council, as well as the police chief just for good measure, should be arrested by the citizens of Newark, and charged for violating these clauses listed above.. They too should get an arrest record, they too should be personally assessed court costs and lawyers fees, and they too, should suffer economic hardship, just because they happened to be he mayor and council at that time of the spray painting….
LAUGHABLE? EXACTLY!
If Newark is going to hold businesses accountable for every little detail written in code, then they need to hold themselves accountable as well. They too need to be arrested, because some individual over which they had no control, did not know how to behave…
“They ( mayor and council)… should have prevented it”, the towns people say… “Throw the mayor and council in jail”..
Bottom line, this type of adherence to the law is stupid. The municipal code needs to be modified before a conglomeration of businesses start filing suit against every police officer, every desk supervisor, every chief of police, every council member and even the mayor. They are open to personal suit, because the business from which the manager was arrested, actually did what the law implied. They stopped the fighting, shut it down, before anything serious happened… One would think from the reading of the law, that is how they would abide by it in that given situation. But no….
Now some random employee, will have to go to court, and if the judge is not reasonable, (which has been known to happen in small towns), he could forever have the stigma of a misguided police force, attached to his name…
The stupidity is not in the intent… The stupidity is the the implementation… There is no filter.
If what’s good for the goose is good for the gander… throw these elected bums into jail……
