So why even vote?
For one, the county is what controls most of our lives, if you live outside any of the smaller city limits…
Two, you pay them enough in taxes (included in your escrows if paying-off a mortgage). or a painful separate check if the asset is fully yours.
Three. They establish and run almost all the things that impact your daily lives… When it comes down to “gee, how well do we like this place in which we live”, the country has probably 60%, the state 30%, and the Federal government 10% of that decision…
If you don’t believe me simply try living without a sewer for one year… You get tired digging holes in your back yard. But also add the perks that sprout up, those festivals in our county parks, that farm next door that never was developed into a section 8 housing unit, the police who not only protect us, but let our kids pet their Clydesdales, and you sort of get a general idea of how important our County actually is to us….
So what happens, when county government stops working? You get everybody fighting for themselves… sort of like New Jersey. You get no planning. You get results where anything goes. You get increased crime because either one can buy off cops who have no one watching over them, or because they were strictured through lack of funding. You get no perks, unless you want to pay a private citizen your out-of-pocket money to get them… And all the stuff you do have now, starts falling through the cracks out of neglect….
Bottom line: it is very important to have someone running the county who can do it well…
Which thrusts us sometimes into this bizarre choice. Is it better to have a person more concerned with morals and appearances who always seems to be deep in a moral struggle just to do their basic job?… Or is it better to be stuck with someone always having the whiff of corruption seeming to surround them, but who makes your own personal life SO MUCH BETTER and easier by his abilities and skill to get things done before you even get to worry about them…..?
This bizarre choice is what New Castle County faces this primary season when choosing its Executive. ….. …. …. Your vote will simply depend on which of the above traits YOU think is more important, either it being sanctimonious, or being successful; which YOU prefer to see embedded in your leader….
Delaware Liberal just came out in support of Matt Meyer. Interestingly that same writer penning that article was also a fervent supporter of Hillary, even to the point of being quite vicious towards Bernie who was performing a service like Matt, challenging the current leader on their principles, especially when it came to the appearance of impropriety over their past choices between ones constituents and ones cronies and corporate friends.. If we remember correctly, the writer’s response to such criticism boiled down to: she’s effective, she gets things done, her enemies naturally try to discredit her and having no substance, must use whisper campaigns and false accusations.
It is ironical that this one writer was all Hillary in the national, and is now all Matt in the local because in this race, Tom is the candidate being pilloried more like Hillary, the seasoned politician, whereas Matt as the new interloper gets a “buy” on using morality to launch a challenge…
Because like Hillary, Tom Gorden has had an amazing career. Granted some is timing. But also granted is that he is feared by this state’s developers, ever since he shocked them with a moratorium on all new development.. He implemented that necessary action which had been a political albatross, so much so that none of his predecessors had been willing to touch it before he arrived. Whereas you may not agree with the copious amounts of development you have seen being dug lately; the control over what has actually been approved for development, was far more consistent with the opinions of those living in those local neighborhoods during the split terms of Gordon, than what occurred during the interims of those holding the office during the split… Can you say: Barley Mills Plaza?
In what matters to our longterm happiness, Tom Gordon has done a better job. In that way, he is our Hillary, the workhorse who simply because he chooses to support the majority will of the people over the peculating wills of the elite, has special interests spend inordinate time digging for dirt and constantly slandering him , even haul him in as a criminal. Yet when actually investigated (Hillary 13 times, Tom 1) , though there may be some impropriety brought to light (on both Hillary and Tom) it is innocent shadiness; nothing near what the accusers tried to paint… In fact, if you notice the shaming in the Delaware Liberal article, the problem they try to paint on Tom is that he was “accused”; little mention that a judge who “actually” saw the “evidence offered”, said it was political bullshit and dropped the case. There really is no difference here between those “accusing” Hillary, indicting her in public because she was called in to account 13 times… (for no one gets called up 13 times unless they are an actual criminal, right) and those indicting Tom Gordon because of “similar” accusations. Yet in each of those times, the evidence overwhelmingly showed not only was there no actual wrongdoing, but we glimpsed how great she was at running things. The real evidence that comes out of each of her “hauling in’s”, is that she is an awesome human being… probably the best we’ll see in our lifetimes… And the same can be said about Tom.
At some point, one has to shut down the accusers… “You have no evidence”.
Matt has a nice resume full of “progressiveness” but is seems short on the executive skills needed to run a metropolitan county. There is no endorsement by others in his “creds” showing he has experience in leading huge numbers of people, often including among that number, those who are trying to see you fail. In his resume I didn’t see any past acclamations which told us how good he was with dealing over conflict. How strong will he stand up to the selfish interests of County Council? Whereas his resume tells us what kind of a person he is, it doesn’t tell us what kind of an Executive he will be. So instead of starting a stock exchange, will he insist on using that money to send Payless shoes to Africa? Point made.
And since Delaware Liberal made a big deal on ethics, one should wisely point out that Matt Meyer’s hit piece last sent out in the mail, uses the same kind of ethics both he and Delaware Liberal try to pretend he is above…
His photo has a bright picture with school kids; Tom’s is grainy yellow darkened to show all the weathered lines on his face… Is that on the up and up? Playing with what you are given, putting out something that is Foxnewsworthy?
Highlighting “Pleading guilty to two criminal charges” without mentioning they were minor misdemeanors, the felonious charges were dropped because they were politically crafted. Is that completely honest? Most of us plead guilty to criminal charges every time we mail in a check for a speeding ticket.
“He was elected in 1996. Since then, many of our largest corporations have downsized or left the state: GM, Chrysler, MBNA, Avon, Astra Zeneca and Dupont?” Oh, you went there? Lets refresh the record on those companies. Both GM and Chrysler were bailed out by the Feds. Did Gordon have anything to do with that? MBNA was bought out by Bank or America… Did Gordon have anything to do with that? Avon consolidated elsewhere due to a huge national sales drop, could Gordon have bought all its makeup and applied it to his grainy yellow weathered face (see above) just to keep them in business? Astra Zeneca, again bought out. Dupont split for liability reasons… None of these are Gordon’s Fault. So what is Matt trying to accomplish by making it look so? Make himself look immature and amateurish? In fact, it was Chris Coons and Paul Clark who were in the office when most of those took place…right?
So is Matt Meyer being fair here? In all truth, this was written probably by his hired consultant, who tells everyone “I’m his consultant; I’m running his campaign” but in reality just creates and mails those things you get in your mailbox, and Matt Meyer’s consultant’s literature is no different from Tony Deluca’s, Tom Sharp’s, or those creeps’ who attack John Kowalko every two years.
Bottom line, Tom had nothing to do with those business switches and losses. and starting in 1996 covers a lot of time, 20 years. Twenty years that between being up or down, things have been pretty good in New Castle County compared to anywhere else near or far.
Matt’s flyer says we gave him a second chance and got more crime and decreased job opportunities. Has crime increased? There is less in my neighborhood than was during Paul Clarks’s span, so naturally I had to look it up to see….
(Just in case some of Matt’s supporters can’t see too well)………..
Perhaps they mistakenly add Wilmington to the mix but really, is that fair to add Wilmington to New Castle County when the current executive has no police-fire-or ambulance jurisdiction within Wilmington’s city limits?
Within the county, crime has dropped 16.4% since we gave Gordon a second term.. I’ve seen its results with my own eyes….
There also was much ballyhoo made in Delaware Liberal’s comments about the drop in reserves… In your own personal life, if a tree falls in your back yard and you have money in savings to cover its removal, … do you keep that money in savings, and leave the tree to rot?
That is what those who bring up this ridiculous charge are advocating… we had needs, we had reserves, we used them…
They say” OH NO! YOU USED THE RESERVES! YOU ARE AN INCOMPETENT IDIOT “. Collectively the entire populace of New Castle County should respond in kind by giving the only person we have ever had who has actually increase our reserves, another opportunity to do it again… In that quiet way, we will all have the last laugh and say….”no, it looks like you are the idiot….”
It used to cost 40 pieces of silver. Now it costs $45,000 dollars.
Apparently there was a giant rally at the Chrysler Plant in support of the power plant. A quick check of car plates (and bumper stickers) showed that Union members from Philly, New Jersey, Maryland were there. Surprisingly, none identifiable from Delaware were there. The surprisingly few Delaware plates that were there, all were black, and stuck on the back of $70,000 cars or trucks…
It appeared to be an attempt to show Newark that lots of people still support putting in the largest power boiler in the state right next (only 20 Wal*Mart aisles or 200 feet) to houses with kids and dogs and cats playing in the yard….
But none of this crowd came to all the public sessions. All those were 20 to 1 against installing the power plant.
So vans of strange people who talked funny were roaming Newark neighborhoods last Saturday and Sunday. They put on two door hangers... One in support of the power plant. One in support of Polly Sierer, candidate for mayor.
Polly Sierer denies she knows who is doing it… “I wish they’d stop she says…” Well, one person whose name is on the pamphlets, is Mike Mullens. The pamphlet says for further information, contact the Delaware Department of Elections. A lot of people did.
The Department of Elections said…”we know nothing of this. Nothing at all”… Most politicos just shrugged and said, “well they got us; they filed under the window of the 8 day reporting, so we will have to wait for the year’s end filing to see who was putting up all this money… It has to be a lot of money.
Very late Sunday night, last night, someone actually looked up the code and discovered that Bob Gilligan changed it last year. And it was signed by Jack Markell. After my memory was jogged, I can now remember El Sonambulo discussing it on Al Mascitti’s show… They have 24 hours to contact the Department of Elections upon either spending or receiving money.
They scrambled all night and most of the day, trying to create a political action committee, get officers in line, get everyone’s story straight, and then file with the Elections Office… There is nothing still on the websites. The election is today….
Finally just before closing yesterday, around 4:46 pm, those who emailed request, begin to get their answers….
The PAC is worth $45,000! Prior to this notice, Polly’s 8 day report shows the total expenditures at around $5,000.… The PAC IS SPENDING 9 TIMES THE AMOUNT OF ANY CANDIDATE TO THROW THE ELECTION….. It may be throwing it your way if you are a Polly supporter; it is throwing it against you if you are not….
Polly still says she has no idea. The man she is pictured with on the PAC’s piece of literature, former Mayor Vince Funk, also says he has no idea of who is running the PAC that features him on the front page…
Here is what the Department of Elections told us….
Among its founding board members is Andrew Lubin, University of Delaware’s real estate director, who is responsible for the development of the STAR Campus….
It is safe to assume, that the University of Delaware is probably putting in $45,000 dollars to swing Newark’s election, in order to get the go ahead from Newark to build the largest gas boiler in Delaware…. nine times the amount any other candidate can raise….
The University of Delaware put up the money, and for cover, had the Delaware and New Castle Chambers of Commerce, the 100 Club, the Delaware Contractors Association, the Home Builder’s Association, Delaware Realitors Association, and a dummy corporation called DEED, for Delawareans for Environmental and Economic Development… a shill sounding name and website if I’ve ever knew one…. It had all these companies pile on…
Why not, to them it was free.
But they all got caught because of Gilligan’s law…
The question is, Newark… what are you going to do about it? Stand there and take it, let the University buy your vote as if you don’t matter, without you even considering any of the alternative?
Or……. you can set them back by voting for Amy Roe…. She is not for sale… nor is she someone who can be pushed around or bullied, she will have your backs…
I happen to think it is a pretty easy choice, but the beauty of democracy is that each one of you gets to decide… Your decision sets in stone a power plant for 75 years… Good luck Newark… As of 7am this morning, everything is riding on you…..
Someone is worried about the Newark mayor’s race. Nancy’s evidence shows that financing for Polly Sierer’s campaign is coming out of One Commerce Center, 1201 Orange Street in Wilmington. This building is the home to over a 100, 000 shadow corporations.
Here is what Nancy has:
The address listed on the Polly Sierer mailer is the Cambridge Drive, home of Mike Mullen. It says to visit elections.delaware.gov for more information on “I Like Polly’s Plan.” The Department of Elections says a PAC was just created but has not yet filed any reports so we will not know until the end of year report who is financing this effort. The PAC had the minimal information legally required, which was the treasurer’s name and contact information. The treasurer is Mike Mullen and his cell was listed – 392-893-7832. I have tried calling but it does not ring and simply says “The person you are trying to reach is not accepting calls at this time. Please try your call again later.”
Here is the location of that area code…..
Two islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean 5000 miles East of Australia…. (it is probably a default; there is no area code for 392 other sources state.) It appears this number is off a spoofer, one of those machines that can fake a number. Here are a list of random complaints made over that area code….
We now have a violation of election law. The deliberate misleading of who is sponsoring a candidate is not allowed. A known illegal phone number was given to the Department of Elections for the treasurer of a small municipal mayoral election…. It is not a mistake. It was provided by a spoofer. It was purposefully hidden.
What happens now.
The Superior Court has jurisdiction over Election Law. All entreaties must go through the Attorney General. Due to the timeliness of the election, “(a) The Attorney General shall immediately prosecute to final judgment all complaints which may be made of a violation of this title.
Furthermore, a complaint can be further made to the Elections Office on Monday, and the complainer require them to notify the Attorney General of this violation. (b) Each department of election and all election officers shall notify the Attorney General of all violations of this title.
Election filings are considered perjury if misfiled. There is no mistake that his was intentional…..
=========
But that is really an offshoot. What is important for Newark is that a giant corporation, with over hundreds of billions in assets, is using surreptitious means to overthrow Newark’s elections for one reason. To approve the largest gas burner in the state of Delaware which will be only 200 feet from resident’s homes. And use the umbrella of providing jobs … to do it.
Would they be doing this if this was really a good plan? Or would they be doing this because time is running out, and the threads are being followed, and soon the truth will show?
Gas burners shower their surrounding ten miles with elements normally kept miles underground. Radon is one. Radon detectors in everyones home will now go off non stop. Lead is another. Imagine a micron depth of lead over your cars, you lawn furniture, your pets, every morning you wake up. Uranium is a third.
There are very good reasons the investors of the largest gas burner in Delaware, which will run 24/7, do not want you to know this. Likewise, there are very good reasons corporations choose to register in Delaware, where no one can find their owners and hold them accountable…..
But at best it comes to character… Who in the hell hires a treasurer they don’t know, who has a phone number showing up in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? Ostensibly so as not to answer questions? So as not to be accountable? So as not to be up front?
A patsy. A pawn. A slave to someone else’s interests… That is who. Seriously. If YOU were running, and YOU are the one who fills out the application form to run, YOU are the one who puts down your treasurer, YOU are the one who types in their phone number in the slot that says after treasurer …. Phone Number…. and YOU didn’t know it was a fake, or you knew and agreed with it, wouldn’t YOUR character be suspect?
Newark. You are so lucky. Consider yourself warned just in the nick of time. Regardless of how you feel about the Power Plant, and now that evidence is rushing in on how damaging it will be you should be concerned, just on character alone, is reason not to “Vote For Polly.” Character alone. Doesn’t Newark deserve better?
Why is Polly’s Treasurer’s number a fake area code?
The answer is in One Commerce Center, 1201 N. Orange Street, Wilmington, Delaware, 19801…….
So vote: Shall it be Wall Street? or Main Street, that is… both the East and West versions of Newark’s Main Street….. And if by chance you are wondering who is squeaky clean and willing to represent all of Newark, and won’t be cowed, intimidated or bought out by the persuasive giants of Wall Street? You should already know it is Amy Roe… She has stood up to them many times. I think that now, at least till this data center passes, someone who is pro-business-as-long-as-it-does-not-kill-residents in its process, is what Newark should have. Actually for now, it kinda appears what Newark really needs.
Unless later, whenever you have a complaint with the city, you want to call the Pacific Ocean….. “Ariel, Ariel… is that you?”
Sometimes one gets so sad they just write what comes down. I got that way reading Delaware Way which alerted me to the fact that Newark City was told the ancillary power plant would be very small, the size for an IKEA….
It is really a gigantic contraption that will be the 5th largest power generator in the state. It will run 24/7 under the pretense of keeping the data center running. It will produce 248 MWh and will use 1MWh to power the accompanying data center, and will spin 50 MWh to the City of Newark for its power., which leaves it 197 MW to sell to the grid…
That is a lot of power. According to Delmarva Power, it would cover 69% of Delaware’s combined Residential, Small Commercial and Industrial customer’s electrical needs.
So by attaching a data center, Delaware gets to build a new power plant, this one built 200 feet from the nearest homes and neighborhoods, that operates 24/7. No power plant attached to the grid, ever operates 24/7. They all have downtime, but this one, because of the data center attached, will be allowed to operate at full capacity 24/7…. an investor’s dream.
So as I look back at Markell’s legacy across 5 years… I see Fisker, Bloom, Delaware City refinery, and now the data center…. The Fisker was a bad deal. In his defense, no one knew how bad.
But the Bloom deal with its attachment to our electric bills, the back-room manipulations regarding the Coastal Zone Act with the refinery, the medical facility outside of Middletown, the snow job on the Kinder Morgan’s acquisition of the Port, and now lying in regards to this data center, make it look like the only way Markell can bring jobs into Delaware, is to trick the public into accepting it…..
There is a definite trend. Very much like keeping the details of common core out of sight until too late…
Sadly openness and honesty do not abide here.
And that is just really sad. Why do we have to trick everyone and why are we only getting shady offers to begin with? Are we selling companies as a positive, our current administration’s ability to trick everyone?
It seems so long ago, I can’t even remember who said… “sunshine is an amazing disinfectant.”
More later. Too soon to comment. Here are the briefs…..
The area was not rezoned because documents FOIA’d showed that all previous discussion were misleading. The power plant was to be allowed if it was secondary to the use of the data center.
The documents showed that out of the 248 MW’s of power, 1 MW would be used to power the data center, 50 MW’s could be used to power the entire town of Newark, and the remainder 197 MW’s would be sold on the grid for as high as price as could be managed….
Primarily because of the lies from Alan Levin as well as Jack Markell and the lawyer’s whose firm is representing the power plant investors, and the fact that this was in violation of the zoning restrictions on the property, the proof of rezoning was denied.
It had previously been promised.
Here is the primary point.
If FOIA was not in existence, we would never have known this. Amy Roe who is running for Newark mayor is responsible for getting this information to the proper people just before the deadline.
This is exactly why in a people’s republic, the people must have full access to all documentation…..
For now. The Power Plant is Dead.
How much pollution spits out of a 240 Megawatt Gas Turbine. By coincidence GE ran tests on one in 2002.
Here is a list of elements that escape out of the smokestack and fall upon the houses and yards surrounding the Industrial area……
- Aluminum
- Arsenic
- Calcium
- Chlorine
- Cobalt
- Chromium
- Copper
- Iron
- Potassium
- Magnesium

So if you enjoy breathing in far more uranium than normal, you should support this power plant.
You may have heard commercials that sound like this:
Rah, rah, rah.
Jobs, jobs, jobs
Sis Boom Ba!
Defense, Defense, Throw Opponents over De Fence…..
What they don’t tell you is that right now you are not breathing in any uranium. You will when this power plant goes on line.
What they don’t tell you is that right now, you are not breathing in any cobalt. You will when this power plant goes on line.
What they don’t tell you is that right now, you are not breathing in any arsenic. You will when this power plant goes on line.
What they don’t tell you is that right now, you are not breathing in any sodium or chlorine ions. You will when this power plant goes on line.
Newark …. you have a choice. Yes! Construction of this plant will employ some specialize union workers. Those jobs disappear when the plant is built. Operations of the plant may employ between 40 or 50…
But over the next 75 years, there is a good chance other employers may move in and hire workers too, without snowing particles upon your house, your organic garden, your pets, your children, you new car….. if you wait, you could have new good jobs without the particulates covering your windshield every morning….
Is this power plant possibly worth the decade you won’t live, if it goes into effect? No one can really make that choice, so it is really up to you….
Do jobs for Pennsylvanians and native Marylanders, matter more than 3650 extra days of your life.
Only you can answer that.
And don’t expect to hear this ever mentioned in a commercial posted between segments of talk radio… on WDEL……
I thought it absolutely amazing that name of the person leading the charge to protect the spawning grounds of Delaware Bay, was Amy Roe…
See if you get it…..
Should be a good omen …….
