Ken Grant, formerly with the Caesar Rodney Institute, a Koch Brothers’ mouthpiece, is now spokesperson for the TDC (The “Data” Center)… Granted, one would think also a former employee of AnalTech, would be technically more anal about throwing around facts. At least one would expect a lot less bluster…
Here is his take in the News Journal….
If you should choose to read it, you will find it to be mostly a lambasting of Newarks’ citizens and very little defense of the Data Center… Very little. Reminds one of when Caesar Rodney declared global warming was a hoax. It would attack all the scientific knowledge in the world, because it found one glacier out of 400,000 that was growing…. Of course in the readers head would pop this question… But what about the other 399,999? But the Caesar Rodney Institute was simply too unconcerned with 399,999 other pieces of evidence to even care…
Anyway… back to what he said….
He said: there are 4000 CHP’s scattered across the US… Here is the data sheet he pulled up to write his piece….. (pdf)
Here are his 4000 units. Here is what he doesn’t show…
Any little business that has a generator that also produces heat is included in his file. Even the original presentation made to the Newark zoning commission, that the data center would need an auxiliary power source like one might find on an IKEA, is included on the map…. I think it would be safe to assume that were such a small power plant going in at the Data Center, there would be no controversy as we speak…
The problem is the size… Ken Grant in his op-ed makes no mention of his size… The difference in size is like you took the penises of 5 horses, sewed them together and then attached that to a person… Saying he has a penis, so does every male… is disingenuous and dishonest… You are technically correct he has a penis… But …. who would want him in an arranged marriage with their daughter?
It may be true there are 8 people in Manhattan with penises. Bet none of them spew 10 horse testicle’s full of discharge, do they?
The one he touts in Austin is 52-75 MW. The award winning Texas A and M, is a paltry 60MW. Delaware will host a 248 MW generator.
Size does matter….
Let us talk water….. At minimum, the Christina River flows 6 cubic feet per second. The data center will use ~34.7 gallons per second (~3 million gal/day). There are 7.48 gallons per cubic foot. Rounding out the conversion, the data center will use 4.64 cubic feet per second of water flow out of the 6 cubic feet per second one usually finds every August. Obviously 1.36 cubic feet are left to fulfill all the needs downstream… The flow levels back in 2003 would leave dry river bed.
That is just not right. And Ken Grant (of course) makes no mention of that….
Let us talk air quality. Currently there is no radon in the air over Newark and Northern Delaware. There will be a lot. Radon as you know, kills. Currently there are no particles raining down on Newark Proper. These particles cause cancer… There will be a lot.. So these people that Ken Grant dismisses will be wheezing, coughing, hacking, and spitting up blood.
It is estimated that now after facts have matriculated into the community of Newark proper, that 98% of its residents are against the power plant. One is certain, that as these health facts get matriculated as well, that would be a guaranteed total…. For who wants to die a needless painful death?
So when Ken Grant calls 98% of Newark’s citizens who are sincerely worried about dying prematurely, ” a small group of very sincere but very wrong people”, perhaps he is correct in his assumption but just needs to turn that designation… the other way around…..
It is very tiny minority of the the Koch Brothers’ minions who deserve the ridicule and derision, not normal hard working Americans, who loved Newark so much, they bought a home here…..

Ken Grant had to gall to show up at Council last night, put himself up last on the public speaking list and then proceed to cast further aspersions on the townspeople under the pretense of an apology. He’s a horses ass of the first order. Amy Roe took a video – she should be encouraged to put this show up on YouTube including the part where Councilman Gifford later took Grant to task for his snide and non-factual presentation. Grant tried to interrupt the elected official at one point and when asked if he was getting paid by TDC Grant balked. Refused to say and then after prodding said he hadn’t gotten paid YET. That drew a laugh. Did that mean the company was broke…..and would Grant have to wait until they sued someone before getting his money? His answer should have been an easy yes, I am a paid shill for TDC. I have his email announcing his new status as a TDC paid employee sent months back.

The Excessive Mindless Releasing of CO2.
Cutting down on coal plant CO2 makes no sense if replaced with gas plant CO2. Too much CO2 is still too much CO2. (Yes I know, more power equals more fossil fuel profits.) Producing more megawatts than necessary to run a data center is out of control fossil fueled greed and just another way to mindlessly continue destroying the planet.
What kind of university would build an excessively, unnecessarily huge belching gas power plant next to it’s campus?
Out of control business greed knows no limits, including lying about their product need, profit and deadly by-products. The result would be thousands of University of DEnial students walking miles a day for months/years on end, breathing the excessive power plant pollution as they’ve hocked their life in hopes on a $50,000 to $130,000 dollar degree and a dire future dealing with purposeful climate destruction.
As if the denying terrorists haven’t already destroyed any chance of the kids inheriting a normal planet and life – instead University of DEnial would have them inhale fossil fuel by-product, containing the long known ‘world changing’ weapon of mass destruction CO2 and say – more is a wonderful thing.
Ken Grant (NJ 5/10/14) says, “We either allow a small group of very sincere but very wrong people to convince us that a pile of concrete is better for our future than using WHAT THE REST OF THE WORLD RECOGNIZES AS THE SAFEST, CLEANEST, MOST RELIABLE SYSTEM IN THE WORLD for energy production……” I call excessive production of fossil fuel’s industrial by-product, CO2, the weapon of mass destruction.
Of course, a larger-than-needed power plant, means larger construction profits, larger power plant profits, larger development capabilities, larger fossil fuel profits, larger contribution to climate change, a larger than life unit, hiding under the skirt of a duel generation system.
Like a cruel hoax, the University of DEnial is demonstrating to the world, EXACTLY what has brought about climate destruction – along with the 30 feedback systems now is play. Decades of shameless, barefaced denial.
The ‘excessive’ power plan is deceivingly clever, but not smart. And that is diametrically opposite to what a university should be.
The power plant harms the character of the university, the integrity of the city, the health and well being of the residence and sadly, further damages the University of DEnial students who will be walking about, subject to the outfall of industrial pollution and the continuing abuses of freely released CO2 pollution.
“Safest, cleanest, most reliable?” What are those excessively large units peaking out from under your skirt? “Oh why shucks, it’s just some extry smokestacks to sky. Never you mind my private business. You people are very wrong about CO2, it’s all a hoax I tells you, a hoax.’

Your 98% number is bullshit. Do the math. In the most contentious mayoral election in Newark history, in which the data center project was center stage, turnout was about 25 %. Of this 25 %, a little more than half voted for candidates who were against the data center.
So more than 80% of the voting population of Newark either supports the data center or doesn’t care enough about it to cast a vote for or against the project.
The No Newark NIMBYS claim “hundreds” of members. Let’s be charitable and assume 500. The population of Newark is about 30,000 people. Less than 2% of the population. Go to the City Council meetings – it’s the same dozen or so people babbling at every meeting.
“So these people that Ken Grant dismisses will be wheezing, coughing, hacking, and spitting up blood”
You are absolutely clueless.

Silly, of course I’m clueless. We all are. That is completely irrelevant. …
What is relevant is which of the two of us is the one, who is less clueless… That is really all that matters…
It appears we both did the numbers. However, there is something you missed. Your snapshot was taken on November 30th. I am speaking of May 30th, 2014. How many months have passed?
Very little was known about the power plant during the election. We have learned much since… if you seriously think that 80% of Newark could be for or unopposed to dying by wheezing, coughing, hacking, and spitting up blood, you should get out and ask them….
We have… THEY ABSOLUTELY HATE THE POWER PLANT… by a ratio of 98% to 2. Even Polly Schier has switched sides …..
Which means if you look long and hard among 30,000 people you can find 600 still in favor … Considering there is only one house in Newark with green signs in it’s yard, that is about right……

I supported my assertions with data. Anytime you feel like providing some to support yours, feel free to do so.
The nature of the hysteria surrounding the project was well revealed in today’s News Journal. Ms. Roe’s letter was typical of the ridiculous hyperbole spewed by the No Newark NIMBY’s.
The scary thing is that this woman came within about a hundred votes of being Mayor of Newark. What an embarrassment that would have been…

There is plenty of data showing the harm this plant will do. There is none showing the benefit…
(Of course, excluding those who have invested into this project, and “hope to negotiate for a payment at a later date.”)
Would you run a hose from your car’s exhaust into the cabin of your car and sit there? Why would any sane person think the citizens of Newark would want to do the same for the entire town, as well as stretching to Wilmington proper?
This is not some NIMYB. This is death… a cancerous, hacking, choking, coughing up blood kind of death….

Nice graph… some pretty colors. Good to make an impression on the feeble minded.
However conveniently omits the 600 TPY of volatile organics that were emitted by Chrysler and will not be emitted by TDC. Compounds like MIBK, xylene, and toluene. Real pollutants, unlike CO2.
Nice try though.
Let me guess – liberal arts grad?
