Same as they ever have.

The above offered exercise is too lax in the use of English and to rigid a math explanation. By not properly preparing children for math, they will end the opportunities for many professions and careers.

One could say, the math problem is phrased in such a way, that those of average or lower skills would miss the meaning of the exercise, especially because of this abuse for fifth graders:

“Interpret the product (a/b) × q as a parts of a partition of q into b equal parts; equivalently, as the result of a sequence of operations…”

Oh yes, 5th graders would love algebra after that outrageous verbal attack on math.

If instructions such as these were passed on to 5th grade children, most would shut down and fail. The very bright and determined, perhaps through their own outside study of algebra or additional advanced study, could be taught algebra, but with zero help – from above quoted instruction. Even the brightest math student might fail, if their algebra test contained such hatred of math.

I’d give the above math instruction, a zero. Zero times anything equals 0.

The real question is, why would corporate interests want to do this to the kids?
